Text Box: Welcome to Shotokan Karate,

The S.K.I.A. is a traditional school of Karate-do that was established in Australia in 1972 by the late Sensei Frank NOWAK. It is a non profit organisation that trains in one of the most disciplined and harder styles of Karate.

Shotokan Karate was founded by the late Master Gichin FUNAKOSHI around the turn of the 19th century. Master FUNAKOSHI brought the style of the Karate from his home island of Okinawa to the island of Japan at the request of the Japanese Emperor and began teaching it at Schools and to the Military Forces. FUNAKOSHI’s pen name was shoto and his students called his style “Shotokan”, a rough translation being “Shoto's club.” From very humble beginnings as a teacher of one Karate school grew one of the largest styles of Karate practiced around the world.

As Shotokan became larger the Japan Karate Association, (J.K.A.) was formed and became the largest Karate organisation in the early to mid 1900’s. Master FUNAKOSHI had a number of very senior and experienced students namely the late Master Masatoshi NAKAYAMA. Master NAKAYAMA became the chief Instructor of the J.K.A and Master KANAZAWA became the first all Japan Karate Champion, was the senior Instructor within the J.K.A and a world renowned exponent and teacher of Karate. He was later elevated to the International Chief Instructor under Master Nakayama.

As Shotokan Karate expanded around the world the philosophies and directions of the JKA changed and Master KANAZAWA formed the Shotokan Karate-do International Federation (S.K.I.F) of which the S.K.I.A is a member.
